Dr. Walter Otieno is a medical doctor, a Senior lecturer and Head of Paediatrics and Child Health Department at Maseno University School of Medicine, a Senior Research Officer at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) / US Army Medical Research Unit, as well as a Honorary Consultant Pediatrician at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral, the Aga Khan and the Avenue hospitals in Kisumu, Kenya. He has also served as the Medical Officer In-Charge, Port Victoria Hospital, Busia, and Kakamega Provincial General Hospital.
Dr. Otieno holds a PhD (Molecular Medicine) from the University of Nairobi, a Master’s Degree in Medicine (Pediatrics), and Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from the same University. He is a Principal Investigator and a co-investigator in several studies on malaria vaccine, malaria transmission intensity, malaria gametocyte carriage, sickle cell trait and the mechanisms of protection against severe manifestations of malaria, as well as several other studies evaluating new malaria treatments for regulatory licensure at the KEMRI Research Unit. As a paediatrician, he has mentored several young doctors who are serving the country in different capacities. A leader in his field, Dr. Otieno has authored and co-authored numerous publications and has earned many international recognitions and honours. He sits in several boards of hospitals and professional bodies in Kenya and brings to the organisation special experience on malaria as well as broader health issues in Kenya.
